Extracted by steam distillation from the wood of Bulnesia sarmient Lorentz ex Griseb. (guaiaco paraguaiano, palo holy of the Paraguay or 'guaiacwooof ), tree of the Zigofillacee widespread in the forests aride of the Gran Chaco (Argentina northern, Paraguay, Bolivia). Not va confuso with the Guaiacum officinal L. (wood holy medicinal of the Antille) né with the Bursera graveolens (palo holy ecuadoriano), nonostant the sovrapposition commercial of the nomi. The phytochemical profile is dominated by sesquiterpenes alcoholic: guaiolo (cis-guaiolo, 70-80%) — a alcohol sesquiterpenic which tende to cristallizzare to temperature environment, rendendo the oil often semisolido or pastous to temperature inferiori to the 20°C. The guaiolo is responsible of the action healing and anti-inflammatory documented, and of the characteristic fragrance woody-affumicato with sfumatura rosaceo-floral only in the world of the legni aromatic. In perfumery the wood of guaiaco is a ingredient classic of the fragrances legnous and of the fougères maschili — present in the composition original of molte icone of the XX century. In aromatherapy it is used as astringent of the mucous membranes, antireumatic topical and fixative of alta quality. Base note woody, affumicata and vagaly rosea.
