Extracted by steam distillation from the parts aeree flowering of Ocimum basilicum L. (basil, sweet basil, basilic), plant herbaceous annual of the Lamiaceae native of the Asia tropical (India, Africa tropical), cultivated in all the Mediterranean, in the Southeast asiatic and in America as herb aromatic culinaria fundamental. The basil presenta numerous chemotypes geografic with profili chimic radically different: CT European (estragolo/linalool), CT asiatic-tropical (metileugenolo dominant), CT cinnamato of methyl (East Africa), CT alpha-terpineol (Reunion). The CT European and quello most widely used in aromatherapy, with estragolo (metilchavicolo: 40-70%) and linalool (20-35%) as dominant. L'estragolo and classificato dto the EFSA as potenzial genotossic to doses high — use interno sconsigliato to concentrations alte; topical use diluted max 1% for adults. The linalool has properties ansiolitic and antispasmodic. In aromatherapy the basil European and used as antispasmodic for colic and spasms muscular, antispasmodic for headache nervous, antimigraine, digestive and tonic nervous.
