Extracted by steam distillation from the flowering tops of Thymus × citriodorus (Pers.) Schreb. (thyme lemon, lemon thyme), hybrid of origin incerta among Thymus vulgaris L. and Thymus pulegioides L. of the Lamiaceae, cultivated mainly as aromatic ornamental for the its aroma citrino inconfondible. The phytochemical profile is dominated by geraniol (30-50%) and geranial + nerale (citral: 15-30%), with linalool and terpinen-4-olo — a composition radically different from the thyme common (thymol or carvacrol), more vicina to the palmarosa and to the verbena. This composition provides to the thyme lemon antibacterial properties and antiviral, especially attribuite to the geraniol (active on Candida, MRSA and HSV-2), with a profile of tollerability skin excellent — not irritates né sensibilizza as the thymol. In aromatherapy it is used as antiseptic sweet and versatile, antifungal, immune-stimulating, digestive and as fragrance citrusy-herbaceous very fresh. Recommended for children above the 6 years. Top-to-heart note fresh, limona and slightly herbaceous.
