Plant description

Extracted by steam distillation from the resin of Canarium luzonicum (Blume) TO.Gray (elemi of the Philippines, Manila elemi), tree of the Burseracee endemic of the forests wet of the Philippines central and meridional. L'elemi and a resin balsamic morbida and fresh, different from the resine dure as the myrrh or the olibano, with a fragrance which reminiscent of the lemon, the fennel and the frankincense insieme. Era gia known in Europe in the XVI century as ingredient of the 'balsami of the quattro ladri' for the properties antisettic and cicatrizzant. The phytochemical profile is dominated by limonene (40-60%), alpha-phellandrene (15-20%) and terpinen-4-olo, with elemicina (5-8%) and beta-phellandrene as components caratteristic. L'elemicina and a fenilpropanoide with possible activity psicotropa to doses high (simile to the mescalina).
