Plant description

Extracted by steam distillation from the sommita flowering of Helichrysum italicum (Roth) G.Don (helichrysum italiano, immortelle, curry plant), evergreen shrub of the Asteracee endemic of the Mediterranean, widespread on the coasts sabbious and roccious of Italy, France, Corsica and isole, Dalmazia. The name 'immortelle' (immortal) derives from the characteristic of the flowers gialli of not appassire also after the harvested. L'helichrysum italiano and the only produttore of italidioni — dichetoni biciciclic esclusive of H. italicum — responsible of the eccezional action antiematoma, antiecchimotic and rigenerative skin which makes this oil only. The phytochemical profile is dominated by nerile-acetate (25-45%), nerolo (5-15%), gamma-curcumene and beta-dion — with italidione alpha and beta (2-5%) as marcatori of quality. The quality of the oil varia enormely in base to the origin: the Corsica and the Sardinia producono the oils more ricchi of italidioni.
